About Us

Home About Chasdei Kaduri

Chasdei Kaduri was founded by a local family in 2013, in loving memory of Kaduri Samorali, a father and grandfather. Kaduri was a very special and giving man who always extended a helping hand to those in need. The organization started out after the family realized the need in the Jewish community and began by assisting four local families. Since it’s inception the demand for assistance has been on a worrying increase.

Today, Chasdei Kaduri is a registered Canadian Charitable Organization. It is the only Jewish organization that is fully operated by volunteers, dedicated to providing weekly delivery of non-perishable food, fresh bakery goods and produce to hundreds of needy Jewish families in the GTA area.

Chasdei Kaduri is a fully volunteer based organization. Chasdei Kaduri’s weekly deliveries and operations occur thanks to dozens of volunteers who dedicate multiple hours of their time on a weekly basis. Our volunteers’ tasks range from picking up full donation barrels, sorting Kosher donations, packing weekly bags for delivery, delivering donation bags to clients’ homes and etc. We also have volunteers dedicated to providing clients with financial and legal advice, social work and marketing of the organization. If it wasn’t for our volunteers, Chasdei Kaduri’s mission would not be possible. Thanks to our volunteers we have been able to help many families/clients become financially stable again.

On the contrary of what most people in our community believe, there most certainly is poverty and starvation right in our backyards. There are people in our local Jewish communities who cannot afford to feed themselves. For the first time in two decades, Jewish poverty in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) is on the rise. Poverty in the GTA’s Jewish community has increased from 10.9% in 2001 to 12.9% in 2011. That is 24,315 Jews in the GTA that live below the poverty line. The poverty line before tax for a family of five is $40,345 (Source: Statistics Canada, 2009 Low Income Lines). The increase is due to a number of factors including community growth, aging population, economic downturn, unemployment rate, slow wage growth for low income earners, single parent households, and government cutbacks to programs.
